Considering a career in graphic design? Here are five essential tips you would have appreciated knowing when beginning your journey in this field.

Familiarity with the various software and tools is certainly part of the process, but becoming a professional graphic designer involves much more than just knowing how to use these tools. We are not only referring to design theory or the latest web design trends. In this article, we’ll share five insights that I wish I had as a budding entrepreneur in graphic design.

1.  Font Matters and less is more
Currently, there are countless typefaces available to select from. You might feel inclined to select a distinct font for every line of text in your design. Avoid it. In terms of your design, clarity is essential, so in this instance, simplicity is key.

You can be imaginative with the font you select, but ensure it is visually comfortable. If you have headings, subtitles, body text, and similar elements in one design, think about utilizing variations from the same font family to highlight the different sections while minimizing distraction.

2.  Sketch by hand
Rather than immediately diving into your preferred design software to develop a concept, consider beginning with a pen and paper to sketch out some ideas. This will enable you to brainstorm and revise at a pace that simply cannot be equaled with software like Photoshop and Illustrator.

3.  Use contrasting fonts to stick out
In design, the aim is to capture an individual’s interest and convey your intended message. You can create a strong impression with small techniques. Utilize differing typefaces. For instance, you might utilize a bold sans-serif  typeface alongside a cursive, romantic typeface to convey the text’s mood to readers.

4.  Don’t be afraid to go BIG
When selecting components for your graphic designs, keep in mind that bigger items draw more focus than smaller items. When utilizing several elements, ensure your main object is bigger than the others, since the viewer’s eye will naturally gravitate towards the larger object.

5.  Always think about your main audience
As with numerous instances in life, finding a middle ground might be the solution. When designing, you need to consider who the design is intended for. At times, it requires you to leave your comfort zone to satisfy your client. And that isn’t always negative; it certainly enhances your creativity and extends your boundaries
